The Beatles were the symbol of the highest communal spirit of the era, but even they got separated. So how did this impossible happen?
Not many people were aware that there were some constant disagreements ever since the death of their last manager, Brain Epstein. It makes sense that nothing was working out smoothly just after his death day in August 1967. In a meeting with the press for the release of his first solo album on April 10, 1970, McCartney revealed his little intention of leaving his bandmates. This news shook the belief of their millions of fans and the other members of the Beatles. However, its been five decades now that McCartney left his brothers and dashed the hopes of their million fans.
Paul McCartney’s left the Beatles
On April 17, McCartney said no in response to the question of him planning to launch a new album or single without The Beatles during a mock interview with The Daily Mirror. However, the headlines of the newspaper were framed and posted that “Paul Quits the Beatles.”
This headline made the rest of The Beatles about the sales of their upcoming album release. So a peacemaker, Ringo, went down to McCartney’s London home to make him not to release his solo album before the band’s “Let It Be” album and film release. The Beatles album was scheduled to come out live in May; however, McCartney shouted him off from his front stoop.
Lennon kept his silence
Lennon was an active musician outside the band for months because he felt betrayed in many ways. Just after the release of “Abbey Road,” he asked for a divorce from his bandmates. However, the band members convinced him not to go public as it could have spoilt some delicate contract negotiations.
When he departed from the team, he played the Toronto Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival with his Plastic Ono Band in September in the year 1969. He played a new solo track – “Instant Karma” at the popular British TV show – “Top of the Pops” on February 11, 1970.
Lennon started behaving like a solo artist until McCartney countered him with an eponymous album. Lennon also wanted to release his solo debut along with the group’s new album “Let It Be” to spice up the split of The Beatles a bit more.
However, McCartney had better learning on all this situation and controlled the story and its timing over Lennon’s announcement. This news story made the rest of the band members to keep their album under wrap until new product hit stores.
Lennon told everything about The Beatles to Ray Connolly, a friend, and reporter at the Daily Mail. Lennon was full of anger and rage as the secret news of him leaving the band was leaked even before he wanted it to be. Connolly was behind this stunt, also though Lennon told him to keep his quite, which eventually he never did and spilled everything in the news editions the very next morning.
Eventually, everything falls apart
The album “Let it Be,” released on May 8, performed well, and the title track and “The Long and Winding Road were the two hit singles of the album. But The Beatles never played together as a one. There were a few rumors about them to get back together; however, nothing was real, and the world is living without The Beatles ever since their break up.
