Recent years have been great for owners of colored diamonds and with every auction held by Sotheby’s and Christie’s, it appears a milestone is set.
The so-called records belong to a niche – for example – this is the world’s most expensive pink diamond or the largest diamond to be sold at the auctions, and records appear to add value or significance to the diamonds that are sold.

The most valuable diamond in the world
The Blue Moon diamond was named after the phrase “once in a blue moon.” It emphasized the incredible rareness of this diamond. It became a worldwide sensation when the original 29.62ct rough stone was discovered in January 2014 in South Africa. It mined in South Africa’s Cullinan mine and its excellent color is not diminished even after being in a rough state. After its discovery, an estimated price of $15M-$20 M was set for this rarest diamond. The price is impressive given that diamonds lose 60 percent of its worth during polishing. However, the price will be still higher than before.
New world record
Blue Moon Diamond was auctioned in their Magnificent Jewels auction secured the position in history books when it sold for $48.5 m, setting a new world record for any diamond, regardless of color or size of the gemstone. Categorized as an extremely rare, internally flawless natural fancy vivid blue diamond that derives its extraordinary color from the Boron element, the Blue Moon is the largest cushion-shaped stone ever to be auctioned in that category.
Such diamonds are priceless and since only a handful of people can afford to buy them, the real price is determined during the auction. As such, Blue Moon’s price figures ranged from 34.2 million Francs to 53.7 million Francs – and they were not far away.
The Blue Moon Diamond finally sold well above the average of low and high figures earning the incredible $48.4 million from Sotheby’s (and Cora International) – that’s over $4 million per carat!

Meet the owner of world’s most costly diamond
Joseph Lau, a billionaire from Hong Kong bought the diamond for his seven-year-old daughter, Josephine. The diamond later got its name after her name as – Josephine’s Blue Moon.
But the Jewellery collection of Josephine doesn’t stop here, nor does her collection of gems. He got another exceptional diamond-a 16.08-carat vivid pink diamond by Christie’s Geneva, the night before he presented the Blue Moon to hold the world record of being the most expensive diamond. And he gave $28.5 Million for the same and renamed it “Sweet Josephine.”
